complexities..

As humans we all see things differently. Over a period of time as we grow, we all evolve, develop differently depending on various happenings, events, surroundings we go through, lots of events leave lots of imprints on our character, some subtle some rather strong, some imprints are such we dont even realise…

There was a big hooplah recently when Ramadoss banned showing smoking in movies, citing it affected kids when their superstars smoke they feel compelled to… before going any further I would like to make it clear I am not with Ramadoss… for sure… but I dont know where I stand either… sigh… I am sure there must be creative freedom and freedom of expression…

But the reason of this post is to just point a huge influence, I think one movie, one scene has had in my mind… for loooooong !!!! I still dont know if I am fully over it… Infact a lot of characters of Amitabh have influenced me in many ways… I am true bhagat of Amitabh, I connect strongly to his character in the movie Shakti and Trishul.

But nothing compares to the effect I had when as a kid I saw the movie Deewar, the plot of Deewar is about Vijay and Ravi, two brothers, both love their mother a lot, but their father abandons them because of treachery by evil villains… The elder son, Vijay, is slightly more mature than Ravi and is deeply affected by the incidents. All injustice seems to have happened to only him… then one day when his mother takes him to a temple, he decides to not climb the steps of a temple, totally having lost faith that any God ever existed… Coz actually if God existed, his mother would not have ever had to go through the things she had to go through… !!!

I am sure all who have seen the movie, Deewar remember that scene… for me Vijay was a cult character from one of India’s most successful movies. The guy loves his mother to bits, takes the wrong path in life, and unlike Ravi is bitter about life…

I connected with the story, quite a bit, as a kid, never before have I confessed this to anyone but my wife a few days back, when we actually went to a temple (btw that was my 2nd visit to a temple in about 3 years).

I have just realised that somewhere the movie affected me a bit too much. I dont know if you ever have felt or experienced something like this. I used to refuse to go to the temple, I have stayed outside, whilst my Mom visited. I have always said there is no God, that its silly to fast, or follow any religious practice. I think in many ways I took to eating non-veg in the beginning even though I was a Jain, was probably my way of showing God that I am rebelling against him. The fact that I love the flavor et all came in much later, but when I took to it, I was surely acting against God and in some ways my silly mind thought that because Vijay fought against God, I must. Sounds silly ‘innit ?

In some ways it was bravado to do what should not be done… I just dont know why, but then like Vijay goes to the headquarters of the goons while they were trying to find him to kill him… so must I !!! 😐

I have ridiculed all those who fast… ! especially if they are doing it for religious reasons… Somewhere somehow my naive mind thought I was ridiculing God.. ! 😐

I’d like to think I have grown out of that silliness and whilst I am not too religious or will follow any custom for the sake of it. I believe in my God, which resides inside me and I must do things that are just in my eyes. I believe in Karma, what we do, we get.

But now when I again think of what Ramadoss meant…. does it really affect kids ??? like it did affect me ?? huh ??

btw if you didnt know I smoke and promise not to give up… so I really am not one of those who doesnt smoke and so wants a ban on smoking ! Infact I love movie stars smoking and think they look rather cool… but then thats me… sigh… !! I dont know how many brickbats I get for this last para…

sigh… at the end of the post, I dont even know if I make even an iota of sense…

Do you think any movie has ever affected you so much ??

    Hitchy,

To each his own. I am of the opinion that if you want something to catch on quickly, ban it. I’m not sure if movies ape society or it is the other way around. But they do affect the psyche of growing children. My almost three year old imitates Aamir Khan in 3 idiots because he loves the song ‘all is well’.

I think the anti tobacco campaign showing the cancerous effect of tobacco is a much more effective tool than a ban. Its enough to freak one out or just make you lose your appetite. Show that to kids too… they may never pick up a cigarette.

err I think I was also a bit like ya. Got totally sucked up into all types of bollywood romantic movies and the husband is paying a heavy price for my mistakes 😛

Movies do influence young minds but if you want ban smoking on screen, then you should also ban other stuff like the treatment of women etc. …Banning is not the solution, education is…

  4. vimmuuu says:

    Smoke…good for you !…but inconsiderate smoking…shame on you ! 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀

Movies influence me a lot..I dont remember any Hindi movie in particular that has…but a few regional movies did !! and yeah, not to forget Spiderman ! 😉

Well, I guess, there is no Correct answer to this. The Ban isn’t totally wrong, neither is it totally correct as well. If it solves it’s intended purpose, then I’m all for it.

I don’t really mind not seeing stars smoke in movies.

The great thing is that as you said, you evolve, and everyday you are a day wiser. It is a sign of a thinking person who accepts that he could’ve been silly in the past. Great going Dhirubhai !

Amitabh Bachchan..the very name used to make me go weak-kneed once upon a time. I loved his movies, I still do though..but I’ve outgrown that phase of idol-worship :D. But yes, I feel movies do influence children and even grown ups to a large extent 🙂

  7. Homecooked says:

Ooh another Amitabh fan! My hubby is one. He doesnt like Bollywood movies but he will watch one if Amitabh is acting in it 🙂 Dont really have an opinion on the ban…I believe people who want to smoke will do so regardless what is shown on the big screen. Its not like its banned in everyday life!

    • hitchy says:

I am sure people who want to smoke will… but like I said, I am also sure kids look upto a few characters, maybe we have to be very careful about rating movies and ensuring what our kids watch… the problem is not everyone thinks of that so seriously…

  8. shail says:

I hope you don’t smoke when your son is around. Not because he would emulate you, but because it will affect his health. Sigh. I am allergic to smoke of all kind, but of course smokers feel they have a right to smoke and I have suffered a lot because husband feels he cannot tell his guests not to smoke. Athithi devo bhava 😦 If I had my way I’d strangle athithi-s who smoke in my house. Grrrr…….

I too am in a dilemma about showing smoking in movies. How can you have such a ban?? How will you portray a character who smokes if it is banned?? Isn’t it creative freedom?? But then of course in India we don’t control what children watch. In the name of family entertainment, right from a small age kids watch anything and everything, from the hero’s sister getting raped, to gyrating hero-heroines , violence, bloodshed, inappropriate language et al and smoking is only one of them.

I can’t think of any movies that have affected me in the way you mention. But some of the characters depicted have affected me so much I dream about them, I find myself consoling characters who go through difficult situations in the movie!

    • hitchy says:

Nope I dont smoke in front of him, not just for his health, but for the reason that I feel guilty… 😐

We never have had anyone smoke in our house, infact we dont own an ashtray… My mom is the boss you see 😛 😛

I am sure we cant ban it… but I also am sure if does have an effect on a kid… !

      I think I take movies a tad too seriously… ! I have so many aspirations… sigh… if life were a movie… !!! I’d set so many things right !!! 🙂

  9. UmaS says:

I am glad to know that you dont smoke in front of your son…very glad Hitch. 🙂

Of course, the movies affect me too so much….there have been days when I am stuck with magic at Hogwarts, when I am week-kneed seeing those romantic hits – maine pyaar kiya, qsqt…so many more. Yes, I think the movies does influence a person. Even when doing things on a regular routine, we find situations exactly similar to the ones seen in a movie, then we remember the dialogue and have so much fun, enacting it.

  10. Phoenixritu says:

Movies …. I came out on my blog to tell people how much I loved Amitabh Bacchan! Of course I loved the Rishi-Neetu jodi and could have followed Kabir Bedi to Italy barefoot when he left to make Sandokan. Sigh!!!! Those were the good old days where I lived movies and sleep-walked through real life

  11. Pallavi says:

That’s exactly the point. You think movie stars look ‘cool’ smoking? That’s what kids think too. ANd thats what we don’t quite want!! Movies are not just movies.. they are projections of what we want to see, and what we want to BE!! If somebody’s going to ban smoking and violence in movies, then I’m all for it 🙂

  12. Santulan says:

Smoking or not smoking is a personal choice. I agree that movies leave impressions upon us, which is why some people take up smoking and drinking because of the movie scenes they see. However they do know that it is harmful for them, before they pick up this habit. Also there are so many things such as drinking, raping, robbing, murder, kidnapping that are wrong but no one is banning them from the screen.

Have you seen the movie Thank you for Smoking? You should
